Uplands House is about connecting a family to the landscape by weaving together the natural site, landscape design, interior design, and architecture. The home opens up to the forest and meadows beyond, allowing the daylight and fresh air to flow through.
UPLANDS HOUSE
Uplands House nestles within a deliberate clearing carved from densely replanted evergreens. The clients approached Dan and his wife Sandra (also a designer) in 2017 to walk the newly acquired site, rekindling a collaboration that began years earlier with the remodel of their previous home.
The new home’s layout reflects the owners’ desire to connect seamlessly to the land while balancing shelter and abundant daylight. At its center, the Great Room anchors the plan and hosts the family’s core activities—cooking, dining, and gathering. The space opens to the landscape on two sides through dramatic 18-foot-wide expanses, where flooring patterns and materials are carefully coordinated to blur the boundary between inside and out.
Three distinct shed roofs define the north elevation, stepping down to follow the natural topography, allowing generous windows to capture soft northern light and frame serene views of the surrounding forest.
